  1. Verify the exact product family. Philips makes automotive LED bulbs, HID ballasts, halogen upgrades, and also fluorescent lighting ballasts. If someone asks for 'advance Philips advance electronic ballast T8,' the actual product is the Philips Advance electronic ballast T8. That is a fluorescent fixture component, not an automotive HID ballast, and I've seen an order delayed five days because someone on the team (note to self: read the full line item) assumed the word 'ballast' meant headlight ballast.
  2. Buy from an authorized Philips store or distributor. Counterfeit Philips bulbs are out there, and a fake bulb with the same part number can fail in a month. According to FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), performance claims have to be truthful and substantiated, so if you see 'compatible with every vehicle' or 'lasts forever,' that's not a claim you can rely on. Ask for the spec sheet.
  3. Check the bulb size and housing, not just the connector. H7 and H11 are different lengths, retention shapes, and beam patterns. A bulb that physically fits can still be the wrong choice for a projector housing. Philips is not 'one bulb fits all,' and no reputable brand is.

Driving with a headlight out: the legal question no one wants to be wrong about

State vehicle codes generally require working headlights at night, and many require two. And if you're an OEM installer with specific vehicle-compatibility standards, you might have requirements beyond the Philips specs I see on the aftermarket side.
