I had already promised three shops their parts would make the 4:00 truck when the fourth call came in. No hello, just: “I need a Philips H7. Can you do same-day?”
A customer’s headlight was dim and flickering, and it had just failed inspection that morning. The shop owner needed the bulb before the customer came back after work. Totally reasonable. Same-day parts exist for exactly this kind of moment.
Before I set the box on the counter, I asked him to do one thing. Not a full charging-system teardown. Just start the car, switch on the headlights, and check voltage at the battery. He wasn’t thrilled. To be fair, he had a deadline, a waiting customer, and no patience for a parts guy asking questions.
A few minutes later he came back with a number: 12.1 volts at idle with the headlights on. A healthy charging system should be sitting around 14 volts. He ran one more quick test and called me back. A 100-amp unit would have bolted in fine. It also would have kept the battery low in exactly the same conditions that caused the original complaint. The customer would have been back in a week, and the shop would have paid for the same job twice.
Changing differential fluid is maintenance, not a diagnosis
Another shop called about a rear differential howling. The customer was in the bay, and the shop wanted gear oil delivered that afternoon. The mileage was 116,000, and the fluid had never been changed. The connection made sense at first.
But here’s what I’ve learned the hard way: changing differential fluid is a scheduled maintenance item. Noise is not a maintenance signal. When a differential howls, you look for the cause—bearing wear, pinion preload, a leak that let the fluid run low. You don’t cure a mechanical noise by refreshing the oil inside it. The shop called me back two days later. It was a pitted pinion bearing.
The thermostat that made me stop

Last year I stopped ignoring our internal return data. Roughly one out of every four same-day electrical parts we shipped came back or got swapped within a week. Almost none of those parts were defective. The diagnosis was. That’s an expensive way to learn that a part can be perfectly genuine and still be the wrong solution.

At our desk, the rule is simple: if the request names a part, we ask what test was done. It takes one minute, and it has saved our customers a lot more than one minute.
- Headlight dim or dead? Read the bulb type off the old unit, and check charging voltage before blaming the bulb.
- Alternator not charging? Verify the output rating against the VIN tag. “100 amp alternator” is a guess, not a specification.
- Differential making noise? Ask whether it’s a service interval or a symptom. They are not the same thing.
- Strange indicator or code? Find out what the system is actually saying before replacing parts. Sometimes EMH just means the backup heat is doing its job.
The shops I respect most are the ones willing to say to a customer: “I need twenty minutes to verify this before I order the part.” That twenty minutes is cheap. The alternative is a same-day part that creates a next-week comeback.
And one more thing, because this matters to me: you can run a one-bay shop and still deserve straight answers and access to the same catalog information as the biggest dealer in town. The shop that orders a single pair of Philips H7 bulbs from me today might be ordering for a whole fleet in three years. Small doesn’t mean unimportant. It means the part needs to be right the first time, because a small shop has even less room for a $900 mistake.
So yes, I’ll still get a Philips H7 on the truck for you this afternoon. But if I ask you to check the charging system first, please don’t take it personally. I’d rather lose sixty seconds answering my question than watch you lose a customer over a part that was never the real problem.
