What is a solid strut channel, and why would a shop need it?

Solid strut channel is the un-slotted version of the metal framing channel. Instead of a continuous open slot, it has either no holes or pre-punched holes. It gives you a clean bearing surface and keeps dirt, sparks, and small tools from falling into the channel. We used it to build a service cart and a wall mount for a scissor lift manual and fire extinguishers. Slotted channel would have worked, but the solid version kept brackets from shifting over time.

One catch: solid strut channel only works if your bracket bolts line up with the holes you punched or drilled. If you need adjustability, use slotted or a combination of both. Here’s what happened to me: I said “solid strut channel” to a supplier. They heard “strut channel.” Result: slotted channel arrived. We were using the same words but meaning different things. Now I specify the SKU and the hole pattern, and I double-check the shipping confirmation.

How to diagnose a bad alternator?

Start with the battery, because a low battery can mimic alternator problems. Then follow a simple sequence:

  1. Check battery voltage at rest. 12.4V or higher is normal.
  2. Start the engine and measure across the battery terminals. Most 12V charging systems should be 13.8 to 14.4V (verify with the vehicle’s service manual).
  3. Turn on the high beams, blower fan, and rear defrost. Charging voltage should stay above 13V under load.
  4. Inspect the belt and ground straps. A loose belt can make a good alternator look bad.
  5. If voltage drops when the engine is hot, check the alternator’s internal regulator before replacing it.

People think a dead battery is always the battery. Actually, a failing alternator can starve a battery and make a brand-new one look dead. That’s a simpler explanation for what I see in the shop. I once installed a fresh battery on a 2018 pickup and got a call the next week that it wouldn’t start. The alternator was putting out 12.1V under load. That mistake cost us a free tow and a customer’s afternoon.

Another clue: a bad alternator can make a whining noise, but not always. The voltage reading under a load test is the real evidence. If it drops below 13V with everything on, the alternator needs a closer look.

When should you pay more for guaranteed delivery?

Here’s the thing: “in stock” is not “delivered.” In Q4 2024, we paid $180 extra for next-morning freight on a Philips ballast. The alternative was missing the deadline for a fleet customer’s van. A missed deadline would have cost us a $4,200 service contract. The expedite fee was small compared to the trust it preserved.

The assumption is that rush orders cost more because they’re harder. The reality is they cost more because they’re unpredictable and disrupt planned workflows. When a shop needs a part by Friday, “probably Thursday” isn’t a plan. Budget for the vendor who can guarantee a day and time.
