In March 2024, a customer called at 3:10 PM on a Wednesday. The van had to be at a trade show dock by Friday at 6:00 AM. The work order had been sitting for two weeks because the customer hoped the electrical problem would fix itself. It did not. The list included a dead low-beam headlight, an oil leak near the rear differential yoke, a throttle body that had not been cleaned in roughly 100,000 miles, and a check-engine light that the driver was trying to ignore.
He asked two questions. The first was: Can you actually get it done? The second was: How long does a headlight bulb last?

The customer’s question deserves a real answer. Unless you drive a fixed number of hours in the dark every day, calendar years are not the right measurement. The better measurement is operating hours.
A typical halogen bulb in a heavy work vehicle may only be rated for a few hundred hours of life before output starts to fade. If a van runs four hours per night with low beams on, a 500-hour halogen bulb can be on the edge within four to five months. The same bulb type might last for two or three years in a weekend car that gets parked before sunset.
Philips LED headlights are rated in a different range, but the ratings are model-specific. They depend on the vehicle’s electrical system and on how much heat the headlamp housing can get rid of. The most advanced LED chip in the world will die early if it cooks inside a sealed housing. That is why I do not quote a single lifetime number for all LEDs. The Yoke Differential and the Body Throttle

Look at the bulb’s rated life, how many hours the vehicle actually runs, and what a night-time failure would cost. Philips LED headlights will not be the right choice for every vehicle. But for a work vehicle that has to be somewhere at a fixed time, they can be worth the price difference.
