Tuesday morning. I hadn't finished my coffee—or rather, I hadn't started it—when the phone rang. Marta from the local delivery fleet was on the line, and she wasn't calling to chat.
"The van failed inspection this morning," she said. "Left headlight. Too dim. Retest has to happen by Thursday at five, or the van sits for the weekend."

It's a mechanical valve, and it's always in "auto" mode: it opens when the coolant reaches the rated temperature and closes when it drops. There's no "on" switch, no "off" switch. You install the right one and let it do its job.
Leo asked me the question I hear about half the time someone touches a cooling system: "Should the thermostat be on auto or on?"
"There's no switch," I said. "It's wax and a spring. It decides by itself. When you take it out, the engine runs too cold. Cold cylinders mean poor fuel atomization—especially with a carburetor. - Unit price—what you pay today.
- Labor and downtime—including the hours your vehicle spends off the road.
- Failure and rework risk—the chance you'll do the job twice.
- Consequential damage—the cracked head, the failed retest, the stranded customer.
I'm not going to tell you the Philips bulb was the brightest ever made, or that it fits every vehicle on earth. It fit this van, it carried the right markings, and a real company stood behind it. That's the bar I use now: not "cheapest," not "brightest," not "guaranteed for life." A part with a spec sheet and a company that answers when you call.
We've also got a new shop policy, born from a 2023 disaster I'd rather not repeat: any repair tied to a 48-hour deadline gets a 48-hour buffer. We fix it right, we fix it once, and we use parts that come with paperwork. The urgent jobs always feel urgent for the same reason—someone saved $15 somewhere and let the real cost compound.
